If you’re not already familiar, check out the music of Brooklyn-based composer Shelley Washington, specifically her 2018 work for choir and chamber ensemble, The Farthest. Her music addresses social injustices through a mixture of rock, jazz, and folk influences, all filtered through her “layered listening” compositional style and her desire to move people in both mind and body. This piece combines some gorgeous choral harmonies with some raucous string and big band scoring. This piece slaps, check it out!
