Winter Premieres

Playing today’s music, and tomorrow’s

We are expanding the contemporary classical repertoire for clarinet, voice, and percussion through interdisciplinary collaborations with living composers. Is there any better way to warm up during the winter months than some hot new music?

Winter Premieres

Season 4

This season brings a special batch of premieres. Sputter (PLUGS IN THE) Box is Sputter Box’s first concert with electronics and video projections featuring four world premieres by composers DM R, Nolan Hildebrand, X. Lee, and Tania Cortés Becerra. Using clarinet, bass clarinet, voice, percussion, electronics, and video art, each composer is writing about a topic they relate to, including Colombian popular music, noise music, the dangers of grind culture, and the mysterious death of migratory birds, known as cuvivíes, in the lagoons of Ozogoche, Ecuador. The electronics components will include recorded tracks and live electronics.

Winter Premieres Season 3

The 2023-2024 Season featured three premieres including the first act of the evening-length work, “Charlie the Football” by Noah Magnus. This work is a satirical musical piece following stereotypical high school trials and tribulations of an animated football, pom-pom, pencil, and can of body spray. “duality iii” by Kevin Kay is a just intonation piece that creates rhythmic patterns through a detuned bass clarinet, vocal microtones, and sine waves. “Vita vana” by Filippo Scaramucci uses text from the Italian poet Tito Balestra and features bass clarinet, soprano voice, and bass drum.

Winter Premieres Season 2
