Evan Williams is an accomplished Memphis-based composer and conductor whose music draws from a wide range of classical styles, from Baroque to Minimalism and everything in between. His work Heavy was commissioned by Levels, a student ensemble at Lawrence University, to be included on their 2016 album entitled “Still.” The influence for the piece was not drawn from programmatic associations, but instead from the ensemble’s dark instrumentation of bass clarinet, trombone, viola, electric guitar, and percussion. Williams utilizes these timbral characteristics by balancing sharp, jagged grooves with a gorgeous, lyrical B section.
